Region 12 Recognizes Award Recipients!!

The Fall Regional Conference saw a number of Region 12 individuals honored

for their hard work and dedication to their campuses, ACUI and the College

Union and Student Activities profession.

The Shirley Bird Perry Outstanding Professional Award honors one of the most influential leaders in our profession

and in Region 12 for more than  four decades.  The award is designed to recognize a member of the region who has

made a significant contribution to the advancement of ACUI.  The 2000 Award recipient has been a professional in

Region 12 for more than 10 years. His service to ACUI has included: serving as the Data and Membership Coordinator;

Regional Institute Chair; 1999 Dallas Conference Host Committee; Nominations Committee; and is currently serving on the 2002 Albuquerque Conference Program Team.  He has been instrumental in addressing issues concerning the international

component of ACUI, and working to bring issues of concern from the regional and international level to the association

for dialog and  facilitation.  He is a mentor to a number of new as well as seasoned professionals; provides insight to

regional issues and member's needs; and is committed to the role of ACUI in the profession.

Luke Altendorf, Senior Associate Director for the Memorial Student Center at Texas A&M University,

is truly an outstanding professional and clearly reflects the characteristics and qualities of this award's namesake!

The Shirley Plakidas New Professional Award honors the current director of the LSU Union and a long-time

mentor and supporter of the development of new professionals.  Shirley was with us in Fayetteville, Arkansas at the

end of October to assist in presenting the first recipient, Keith T. Kowalka, Assistant Director of the University

Center and Associated Facilities at the University of Houston, with this recognition.  Keith's service to the

Region includes: Fall Conference Chair for 1999; 2000 College Bowl Tournament Host Coordinator; Communications

and Development Coordinator; and Region 12's Elections Committee representative.  In addition, he has made several

presentations at the regional and international level of ACUI; has been published in the ACUI Bulletin; and has been a

facilitator for both the I-LEAD and STEP student educational programs.

> Sumit Jain (2000 I-LEAD Registration Grant Recipient and 2000-01

Scholarship Recipient) - a sophomore attending Louisiana State University,

majoring in computer science.  Began serving in the fall of 1999 as an

Associate Chairperson of International Committee for the UPC and presently

serving as the Chairperson.  When asked what advice would he give a new

leader, Sumit responded, "becoming a leader puts a lot of responsibility

on your shoulders.  You become a role model for many students.  Just do

things the right way and try to be a friend to all the members."

> Catherine Sue Rogers (2000-01 Scholarship Recipient) - a junior attending

Southwest Texas State University, majoring in Early Elementary Education.

She has been a student worker and committee volunteer since her freshman

year in the Campus Activities Office.  When asked what she thought the

role of the Student Center is on a college campus, Catherine Sue pointed

out that it "needs to be just what it is named.  The Student Center for

involvement and activities, or where students can meet to form a Union

together through organizations and interests.  Student Centers are the

heart and soul of the University.  It is a place where students can get

away from the academic world that sometimes consumes them.  Student

Centers should have a welcoming environment that connects with and

accommodates a substantial percent of the student body."

> Timothy Alan Hemphill (2000-01 Scholarship Recipient) - a senior attending

Louisiana State University, majoring in Accounting and Finance with a

minor in Music Composition and Philosophy.  He has been involved with the

UPC since his freshman year, and currently serving as Entertainment

Committee Chairperson.  When asked to discuss why he enjoys his

involvement with the Union, he responded with "the most memorable moments

for myself has to be working with the Union Program Council.  Not only are

the people who work there wonderful, but you attain a kind of education

that cannot be received in any classroom.  It aids in building social and

leadership skills as well as forming fabulous relationships with others in

the organization.  We volunteer to serve the campus community by having a

direct hand in raising the standards of our environment at LSU."

>  > Chat with the Regional Director

The speed at which the past year has come and gone has only been eclipsed

by the changes we have seen in our association, in our world and in our

students.  I have pondered this article much in my daily commute and can't

figure out how to get everything I need in here; so, I'll try to be brief

or succinct or something!

> Volunteers are the heartbeat of our association and of our region.  This

past year, the Regional Leadership Team has committed countless hours and

much of their energy to preparing, producing and providing services to the

staff and students of region 12.  From the exciting competition of the

regional Recreation and College Bowl tournaments; to gathering to announce

our first ever professional awards in New York; to the summer graduate

student drive-in; to our outstanding experience in the Ozarks at the

University of Arkansas for the regional conference; to scholarship grant

decisions; to membership recruitment; to newsletter development; our

Regional Leadership Team has done an incredible job.  Much is behind the

scenes, but all of it is with a passion and a commitment to ACUI that is

exceptional!  Thanks to all of you: Michelle, Lindsay, Keith, Boyd,

Stephanie, Staci, Amanda, Tom, Ed, Patti, Mark, and Shannon!

> The implementation of the changes in the structure of ACUI have been

ongoing, as evidenced by the recent on-line ballot for president elect and

Board of Trustee members.  It is exciting to see members willing to stand

for election and for the membership to respond in kind and vote!  (No, I

won't make a recount comment!)  Although voting has not ended as I write

this, I know that the leadership of our association will continue to be in

good hands for the coming year.  Thanks to Keith T. Kowalka for serving on

the Elections Committee.  Keith will also serve on the 2001 Committee for

Region 12.

> The next big step for us is the development of the Educational Councils.

At the regional level, one-year Ed Council Chair appointments were made at

the regional conference from current Regional Leadership Team Members.

These council chairs will serve for one year, helping to make the

transition to the council model.  Those full term positions will be

available this spring.  The current Education Council Chairs are:

Administration, Finance and Management: Tom Rufer, University of Arkansas;

Campus Life and Program Management: Paul Sutera, Rice University;

Facilities and Operations: Ed Knoll, Tarleton State University; and

Auxiliary Services:  Keith T. Kowalka, University of Houston.  You can

anticipate hearing from these folks as the education councils develop over

the next several months.

> We continue to plan and to make our regional programs part of the

long-term calendar.  In that light, the 2002 Regional Conference will be a

multi-institutional hosted event in Houston; chaired by Paul Sutera of

Rice University.  We are excited about the partnerships between urban,

public, private, 2 and 4 year, small and large institutions this

conference will allow.  Watch for more from Paul!  In the meantime, the

2001 conference planning and host committees under the direction of Staci

Pepitone are busy getting ready for us to journey to Baton Rouge!  Please

plan now to attend this outstanding opportunity.  It will be a great time

for students to network and to learn; and for professionals to connect,

learn and reflect.

> It was a great pleasure and honor to award our first "Shirley's" this year

at the regional conference and at a later campus presentation.

Congratulations, once again to the Shirley Plakidas Outstanding New

Professional, Keith T. Kowalka of the University of Houston and to the

Shirley Bird Perry Outstanding Professional, Luke Altendorf of Texas A&M

University.  Both of these outstanding professionals bring the best of our

profession to ACUI and to the region, their campuses and students!

> And now we are about to come full circle, to the annual conference in

Toronto, March 25-28, 2001.  We hope to see you there!  We will gather for

a regional meeting, have a night on the town and enjoy a reception with

Region 13 prior to the final banquet.  There will be many opportunities to

connect and to socialize.  We will have the Battle of the Regions in the

historic Hart House during this conference...be prepared to say YES! when

Shannon Murphy calls you to be on the region's team!  We'll also need

enthusiastic supporters in the audience!!

> Watch for more information on the development of Education Councils,

Regional Leadership Team volunteer opportunities, and association

information in the coming months.  It is always a pleasure to serve this

region and this profession.  Please do not hesitate to call on me if you

have a question, would like to volunteer or need assistance!  Happy

2001!!!

2000 Fall Conference Wrap-Up

This year's Region 12 Conference was an absolute success, and the students

and staff at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville want to thank

everyone who attended the conference for their support.  The number of

participants totaled 93, which included students and staff from all areas

of our region as well as from surrounding regions.  Fifty-two staff

members, Thirty-four students, and 7 vendors and guests attended this

year's conference.  The large number of delegates and the contributions

made by Chartwells, TIAA-Cref, and Premier helped the conference team

raise approximately $2,000 for the region, which does not include the

money raised for the scholarship auction.  WAY TO GO REGION 12!

> The new programs sponsored by the conference, such as the pre-conference

workshops and the ice cream socials, were well attended and were viewed by

the delegates as worth-while additions to the program.  Our  keynote

speaker, Don Soderquist the Executive Director of Walmart, was phenomenal,

and held the delegate's attention throughout his entire presentation.

The food was spectacular and the entertainment full of laughs and shrills.

The Haunted Hall, sponsored by the Residence Interhall Congress, was an

absolute thrill to all of those who dared to venture through its mazes of

horror, and the pumpkin carving, karaoke, hypnotist, and late-night games

gave everyone the chance to show off their creativity.

However, the most important element of the conference was the people.

Numerous attendees shared that their most favorite aspect of the

conference was the people who attended and the friendliness of our region.

The social activities and the planned discussion groups provided an

opportunity for the delegates to meet colleagues and peers and discuss

issues at their institutions.  Friendships were made and networks

developed.

We have never worked with a more dedicated staff than the Region 12

Conference Team.  All of the achievements made during this conference were

due to their innovation, organization, and commitment.  Thank you from the

bottom of our hearts!

Over twenty years have passed since a Region 12 Conference occurred in

Arkansas, and after this conference we have no doubt that you'll be back

to see us soon.
