 REGIONAL MEETING - Sunday, March 5 @ 4:15 p.m.

We will be making some very special presentations, covering important

regional business and creating networks for the rest of the conference

activities.  Please come and connect with your Region 12 colleagues, meet

folks new to the region and celebrate with us the unique recognitions to

be made at that time.  This will be time well spent to make the 2000

 Conference a success.

GATHERING AND DINNER ON THE TOWN - Monday, March 6 @ 6 p.m.

A long-standing event at annual conferences, the Region 12 dinner has been

expanded to include an informal gathering/reception before a dinner out on

the town on Monday evening.  Watch the conference newsletter and message

board in Grand Central Station for the location of the gathering and

Dallas....let's make the Big Apple aware that we're there!!

 BATTLE OF THE REGIONS - Monday, March 6 @ 9 p.m.

The cries of "WE WON!!!" rang throughout the Anatole Hotel last March as

the powerful and dynamic Region 12 College Bowl team won not only their

first, but their second and third matches in the Battle of the Regions,

emerging as runners-up in the overall tournament.  The gauntlet has been

thrown, the team has a reputation to protect and you all have a team to

either join or support.  We will be recruiting team members at the

Regional meeting as well as prior to the conference.  If you are

interested in playing for the Powerhouse Region 12, please contact Lanita

Hanson via email at LH23@swt.edu or at 512/245-3219.

At the close of the conference, plan to join the region for a delightful

reception, light refreshments, and fine conversation before the final

 banquet.  Once again,

the conference newsletter and information center (Grand Central Station)

will be the source of the location and other pertinent details.  We hope

 you will

join your Region 12 colleagues at these activities and events and "BE PART

 OF IT!"

 Chat with the Regional Rep

Greetings!  It is a pleasure to write to you for the first time officially

as the Region 12 Representative.  Many thanks to outgoing Regional

Representative Vicki Whitmer, University of North Texas, for her

commitment and leadership to the region!  ACUI is dependent upon the

services of its volunteers and Region 12 has the best!  Recognition for

service also goes to the following outgoing Board members:  Albert Chang,

Southwest Texas State University, Recreation Coordinator; Lori Korman,

 Louisiana State University - Shreveport, Scholarship and Recognition;

Lillian Dees, Southwest Texas State University, Membership and Data

Coordinator; and Sara Solloway, Texas Tech University, Women's Concerns

Coordinator.  Lori and Sara have left us for other pastures...Lori to the

University of Central Florida and Sara to Purdue University.  Their new

universities and regions are lucky to have them!  Thanks for your

 contributions!!!  We'll miss you.

We also welcome some new members to the Board:  Boyd Beckwith, Rice

 volunteering!

Many thanks goes to Keith T. Kowalka, University of Houston, the 1999

Regional Conference Committee, Lilly Dees and the SWT LBJ Student Center

staff as they planned and hosted the 1999 Regional Conference at Southwest

Texas State University.  It was an excellent professional development

experience as well as an opportunity to network with colleagues and to

catch up with friends, old and new.  Please accept the sincere

appreciation of the entire Board for all your efforts!  It was truly a

 memorable experience.

Compelling question..."A provocative or compelling question or quote

invites people to share their thoughts, express their insights, debate a

particular point, or simply reflect on others' meaning."

       - like minded people web site

For the past 18 months, there has been much discussion about the future of

ACUI as an organization.  There have been compelling discussions at the

annual conference, during a summer strategic planning session, at Core

Team meetings in September, and now continually across the list serve.

The input of ALL the members of the Association is essential for the

success of this process.  The Core Teams focused their discussions and

recommendations on five areas:  finance and budget, workplace, membership,

 governance, and programs and services.

During the regional conference we were able to review the recommendations

from the Core Teams, discuss them with Matt Cameron, ACUI President, and

begin to develop a response to the recommendations.  By now all members of

the association have received a copy of these recommendations by mail to

stimulate more compelling conversation and to encourage dialogue.  Please

review the recommendations in this light.  Discuss them at your staff

meetings.  Encourage an exchange of ideas.  SHARE the outcome with the

association by submitting them to the list serve at acui_spct@indiana.edu.

Share your personal opinions, questions and/or concerns on the list serve

as well.  If you wish to subscribe to the list serve, instructions are on

the ACUI website at WWW.acuiweb.org.  Other supporting articles and

information concerning the reinvention process is also available on the

web site.  Please let me know if you have not received a copy of the

recommendations or have questions about them.  Recommendations will be

presented to the Association at the annual conference in New York in

March.  This process has continued to be a very open discussion with a

wide variety of opinions in regards to the change, future impacts of

change, roles, needs, and  issues.  Please make your voice heard in this

very compelling and crucial issue TODAY!

As your regional representative, I hope to provide you with the

information, service and leadership that will assist the region in

becoming an "exemplary community", one in tune with the needs of its

institutions, its professional staff and student members, and with

association issues.  I am as close as an e-mail (LH23@swt.edu), phone call

(512/245-3219), or even a real letter (SWT, LBJ Student Center, 601

University Dr., San Marcos, TX 78666)!  Please let me know how I, as well

as the Regional Board, can serve you.

Lanita Hanson is the Assistant Director of the LBJ Student Center at

Southwest Texas State University.  She serves as the Regional

 Representative for Region 12.

Let's Play Bowl

 Location

The 2000 Regional College Bowl Tournament, in conjunction with the ACUI

Recreation Tournament, will be held at the University of Houston in

Houston, Texas from February 18 - 20, 2000.  The National Championship

Tournament will be held this year at Bentley College in Waltham,

 Massachusetts from April 28 - 30, 2000.

Remember, all schools pay their own travel, housing and most meals

but there is no tournament fee for the  National Competition.  With this

in mind, Region 12 will be awarding a cash prize to our first place winner for

financial support to the National Tournament.  Remember that College Bowl

rules require that a faculty or staff member accompany the team.

Forms

The College Bowl company has mailed out enrollment and player eligibility

forms to the sixteen schools who have purchased their "10" College Bowl

packets.  In addition, we are planning for ALL schools who have purchased

packets to participate in this year's RCT.  If your school has purchased

10 packets but is not planning to participate, please contact me ASAP.

NOTE:  Eligibility forms must be sent to me at Texas A&M university, NOT

 College Bowl.

Tentative Schedule

Please access the College Bowl website at www.collegebowl.com for the

tournament schedule along with information regarding hotel reservations

and fee schedules.  NOTE:  Banquet fees for additional guests or staff

(outside of game officials and moderators, scorekeepers, judges and

timers) is $10.00.  Basically, if you have an additional staff member

attending who are not volunteering as a game official, they will need to

 pay $10.00.

Officials

So that I can efficiently assign officials to games, please submit your

information via email at rhodes@msc.tamu.edu.  We are in need of willing

and experienced people for moderators, judges, reset/timer/announcers and

scorekeepers.  Please include your name, institution, email address, phone

contact and previous College Bowl experience along with areas of interest.

You may rank your preferences as 1st and 2nd choices.  Game officials who

pre-register are expected to be available to officiate tournament rounds

on Saturday and Sunday.  There will be at least 4 to 6 rooms playing

simultaneously.  Each room will need a judge, moderator, scorekeeper and

reset/timer/announcer.  We are attempting to schedule the pre-reading of

packets for officials along with breaks throughout the day.  Officials who

wish to pre-register are asked to do so ONLY if they have actual

tournament experience in their position.  Also, moderators who have not

previously moderated at our regional tournament should contact me after

the scheduled Coaches and Captains meeting the Friday of the tournament.

ONLY Coaches and Team Captains will be allowed to attend the Team Captain

meeting scheduled for 9:30 p.m. which follows the Officials meeting set

 for 9:00 p.m.

 Fall Conference Revisited

Southwest Texas State University (SWT) was the site of the 1999 Fall

Regional Conference on October 8-10.  "Building A Living Kaleidoscope for

the Next Millennium" was certainly a conference that will be remembered by

those in attendance.  Approximately 80 delegates traveled to San Marcos to

 participate in this wonderful event.

This year's Conference Committee took great delight in the educational as

well as social opportunities that were offered.  The state-of-the-art LBJ

Student Center at SWT, which opened in January, 1998 served as the host

site.  All-Conference presentations by Debra Stogel, from the

Anti-Defamation League, and Ken Morten, Director of Student Activities and

Recreation at McMurray University, started the conference off on Friday

evening.  The conference also was pleased to have in attendance the

current President of the Association, Matt Cameron.  He lead a discussion

about the future of the Association and went over some of the Core Process

Reports that is serving to "reinvent" the Association.  Delegates pulled

out their credit cards and checkbooks to support our Scholarship Auction

(which made a record breaking $835 for the Regional Scholarship Fund!)

with special THANKS going out to the fabulous models.  Thanks must also go

out to the institutions/companies which contributed items to the auction:

ACUI Regional Board           Arkansas State University

Collegiate Products, Inc.             Louisiana State University

 McMurray University           Rice University

Texas A&M University          University of Arkansas

University of Houston         University of Texas - Austin

University of Texas - El Paso University of Texas - San Antonio

There was student to student networking, staff to student networking,

staff to staff networking and all the networking in between!!

We now must wait until October of 2000 to gather in Fayetteville, Arkansas

for next year's conference!!  Many thanks to Southwest Texas State

University for hosting the conference.  Also a BIG thank you must go out

to the members of the 1999 Conference Committee for all of their hard work
