Slam Results
200
The
2007 regional slam hosted teams from seven different universities.
Poets from Nicholls State University, Rice University, the University
of Houston, Sam Houston State University, Hendrix College, the University
of Arkansas - Fayetteville, and Louisiana State Universtiy competed
at UNT for the chance to compete in the national Poetry Slam.
Zora
McBride of Hendrix College blew the audience
away as the highest scoring poet with a total score of 29.9 out
of 30! The final results of the competition are: Sam Houston State
- 1st, Hendrix College - 2nd, Louisiana State University - 3rd,
and University of Arkansas - Fayetteville 4th.
Congratulations
to Sam Houston State poets Chris Bailey,
Evan Carpenter, Shabrika Coleman (alternate), Grace
Ekeke, Brandon Jackson (alternate) and Emmanuel
Onwuchekwa. Their first place finish gives them the opportunity
to compete in the National Slam at Eastern Michigan University.
2006 Slam Results
Without
any doubt, the 2006 Region 12 Poetry Slam hosted the best overall
writing and performance ever witnessed in this annual event! A record
number eight teams electrified the University of Houston University
Center
on February 25 as the rookie team from Louisiana State University slammed
their way to 1st Place.
In the first Preliminary Round, Sam Houston State University and Nicholl's
State University nudged out Texas Southern University and the University
of
Arkansas--Fayetteville for spots in the Final Slam. In the second
Preliminary Round, Hendrix College and Colllin County Community College
came up short as LSU and St. Philip's College earned the other two spots
in
the Final Slam.
All eight teams demonstrated exceptional skill, confidence, and camaraderie
throughout the weekend. Workshop attendants utilized more-casual spoken
word as they shared their own stories and aspirations about Poetry Slam,
followed by tips and discussion concerning team slam format. During
the
workshop, and during Friday night's team meeting, discussion surfaced
concerning the role of "alternates" in team competition which
will likely
lead to further consideration going into 2007.
Slated volunteer Slam Master Marcell Murphy was unable to attend due
to a
family emergency. Dave Wagner, in his final event as Region 12 Poetry
Slam
Coordinator, facilitated the workshop and emceed the Slam bouts. Assisting
from planning through the wrap up was incoming Slam Coordinator Jim
Fawcett
of the University of Houston. Fawcett now takes the reigns as Coordinator
for 2006-2008, while Wagner moves onto a national volunteer position
with
ACUI as Poetry Slam Team Leader. ACUI also thanks Sunny Zeringue from
LSU
and Dan McDaniel from Sam Houston State University for their help with
scoring. Although we did not collect the names, a very special thanks
to
all of the on-site volunteer judges who made the competition possible.
