2008 Tournament Results

The 2008 Region 12 College Bowl Tournament this year featured a full round robin tournament with 12 teams.  The University of Houston was a wonderful host and many thanks are owed to them as well as to the fantastic and dedicated volunteers and the competitive yet congenial teams.

This year’s Region 12 College Bowl Championship title was captured by Rice University after an impressive set of playoff wins. Players Derek Green, Sean Bryan, Sarah DeMeritt, and Ian Fedeli were led by Coach Stan Barber.  They will represent us well at the National Tournament, April 25-27 at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota.  To earn their spot at Nationals, they came from an 8-3 record in the round robin to sweep through the playoffs.  Baylor entered the playoffs with a 10-1 record, moving to a second place finish in the tournament.  Tarrant County Community College-Northeast also generated a strong 10-1 record to move into the playoffs for the first time, and they finished third overall.  The team from Harding University completed the set of top four teams, taking fourth place in the tournament after a 10-1 record in the round robin. 

We also need to recognize our All Star players.  Robert Brauer from Tarrant County Community College-Northeast took top honors with a 62.7 point-per-game average.  Eric Headstream of Baylor University and Jonathan Abel of Midwestern State tied for second place with an average of 54 points per game.  Derek Green of Rice University rounded out the top four with an average of 49.5 points per game. 

Region 12 also recognizes one team that exhibits noteworthy good sportspersonship. This year’s award, as voted on by players and officials, went to to the team from Texas Tech University. Tech

2007 Tournament Results

The 2007 Region 12 College Bowl Tournament is one of the largest single-region competitions in the country. This year 15 teams competed in a modified round robin at the University of North Texas. Many thanks to the fantastic and dedicated volunteers, the competitive yet congenial teams, and our generous host school.

Congratulations to the Region 12 College Bowl Champions—the team from Baylor University: John Solter, Stephanie A. Bialko, Erik Ellis, Eric Headstream, and Sarah Swinney, with Coach Dr. Brent Froberg. They will represent us well at the National Tournament, May 4-6 at USC in Los Angeles. To earn their spot atNationals, they remained undefeated after facing tough competition from the three other teams in the playoffs. Midwestern State University earned a berth in the playoffs with a 7-0 record in the round robin, moving to a second place finish in the tournament With a 5-1 record, Louisiana State University-Baton Rouge moved into the playoffs to finish third. Harding University took the fourth play-off spot with a 5-1 record, finishing fourth overall.

We also recognized our top All Star players. Jason Loy from Harding University took top honors with a 78.5 point-per-game average. Adam Halpert of Rice University and Ron Bailey of Midwestern State tied for second place with an average of 75 points per game. John Solter of Baylor rounded out the top four with an average of 72.5 points per game.

Region 12 also recognizes one team that exhibits noteworthy good sportspersonship. This year’s award, as voted on by players and officials, went to the University of Houston-Downtown team.

History of ACUI and College Bowl

ACUI and College Bowl Company, Inc. have been educational partners since 1976 when the College Bowl campus program was born. ACUI provides a direct link to campuses across the country and provides a significant volunteer pool that helps organize and administer the College Bowl program at every level — on campus, at regionals, and at the National Championship Tournament.

Through ACUI’s relationship with College Bowl Company, Inc., ACUI is also educational partners in the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge. A majority of volunteers at HCASC are ACUI members, and they serve as game officials, event staff, tournament officials, computer consultants, hospitality, and more.

The College Bowl Program Team, led by program team leader Sharon "Chickie" SIlverstein, began a detailed analysis of the College Bowl program in July 2004. Click here to follow the progress of the committee.
